Sodium Emission from Io: Implications

چکیده

The surface of lo may be covered with a layer of ammonia ice containing trace amounts of sodium potassium, and calcium; and atmospheric nitrogen could be formed as a photochemical product of ammonia photolysis. Intense sporadic sodium emission from Io can be excited by collisions involving vib~ationally excited n.itrogen molecules. These metastable molecules may be formed by electron impact, with electrons energized by an auroral mechanism. In order to account for the intensity ratio of the sodium doublet, it is necessary to invoke scattering in a thick gaseous envelope ejected by Io. Subject headings: abundances Jupiter satellites

Galileo imaging of atmospheric emissions from Io.

The Galileo spacecraft has detected diffuse optical emissions from Io in high-resolution images acquired while the satellite was eclipsed by Jupiter. Three distinct components make up Io's visible emissions. Bright blue glows of more than 300 kilorayleighs emanate from volcanic plumes, probably due to electron impact on molecular sulfur dioxide. Weaker red emissions, possibly due to atomic oxyg...

Alkali and Chlorine Photochemistry in a VolcanicallyDriven Atmosphere on Io

Observations of the Io plasma torus and neutral clouds indicate that the extended ionian atmosphere must contain sodium, potassium, and chlorine in atomic and/or molecular form. Models that consider sublimation of pure sulfur dioxide frost as the sole mechanism for generating an atmosphere on Io cannot explain the presence of alkali and halogen species in the atmosphere—active volcanoes or surf...

Io’s volcanic control of Jupiter’s extended neutral clouds

Dramatic changes in the brightness and shape of Jupiter’s extended sodium nebula are found to be correlated with the infrared emission brightness of Io. Previous imaging and modeling studies have shown that varying appearances of the nebula correspond to changes in the rate and the type of loss mechanism for atmospheric escape from Io. Similarly, previous IR observational studies have assumed t...

NOTE: Eclipse Spectroscopy of Io’s Atmosphere

High resolution optical (4193–6619 Å) spectra of Io in eclipse show auroral emission in five lines: [OI] 6300, 6363, 5577 Å and Na 5889, 5896 Å. We conclude that Io’s diffuse red emissions imaged by the Galileo Solid State Imager (Geissler et al. 1999) are due to impact or dissociative excitation of oxygen, while diffuse green emissions are caused by the impact or dissociative excitation of sod...

The Atmosphere and Ionosphere of Io Michael B. Mcelroy and Yuk

A variety of models for Io's atmosphere, ionosphere, surface, and environment are developed and discussed in the context of recent observational data. The sodium emission detected by Brown appears to require a collisional excitation process in Io's atmosphere, and the extended sodium emission measured by Trafton et al. may require scattering of the planetary radiation by an extended sodium clou...
